Beautify Your Smile with Laser Gum Contouring By Craig Goldin DDS on August 22, 2013

Troy Laser Gum ContouringNot everyone is born with a perfect smile. Most people think bleaching or straightening their teeth will solve all of their problems, however, there are many factors that can keep a patient from having the perfect smile they desire. For example, gums that rest too high or too low on the teeth could result in a misshapen “gummy” smile. Uneven gums leave teeth looking too small or even crooked.

Luckily, due to advances in cosmetic dentistry, procedures like laser gum contouring can help eliminate a “gummy” smile. Also known as gum reshaping or sculpting, laser gum contouring helps even out the gum line, which leaves teeth looking symmetrical and uniform.

Originally, dentists used scalpels to remove excess gum tissue and bone as part of the gum reshaping process. However, the scalpel technique is associated with higher degrees of pain and an increased risk of infection. Now, cosmetic dentists use a special laser to eliminate extra gum tissue; the laser cauterizes the wound as it cuts, resulting in less pain and bleeding.

At our cosmetic dentistry practice in Troy, we have helped many patients with excess or uneven gums beautify their smiles through this virtually pain-free technique. The lasers allow our cosmetic dentists to sculpt the gums more precisely, giving patients a higher level of satisfaction and confidence.

Are You a Candidate?

To be a good candidate for laser gum contouring, the patient must have healthy gums and teeth. Patients with periodontal disease or gum disease should not proceed with any aesthetic sculpting surgery until that condition is addressed.

Laser gum reshaping is generally very safe, so most patients with healthy gums and teeth are able to proceed with the surgery. You could be a candidate for laser gum contouring if you experience one of the following conditions:

  • A “Gummy” Smile - A smile that reveals excess gum tissue is usually referred to as a gummy smile. By using a laser, the dentist can remove excess tissue to elongate the teeth.
  • Uneven Gum Line - Patients with uneven gums can seek laser treatment to make the gum line look more symmetrical.
  • Short Teeth – When the gums extend too far down the teeth, it can make them look short and stubby. Laser gum contouring can be performed to lengthen the teeth and improve the overall appearance of the smile.
  • Other Procedures - Laser gum contouring is also sometimes used during other periodontal procedures like crown lengthening or the installation of porcelain veneers. This eliminates excess gum to make the crowns or veneers look more proportional.

Laser gum reshaping is not for everyone, and patients should consult with their cosmetic dentist before undergoing treatment.
