IV Sedation from a Certified Dentist Makes Treatment Easy and Convenient

At the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute, Dr. Craig GoldinDr. Marcy Goldin, and Dr. David Whalen want to make treatment easy and comfortable. If you suffer from dental anxiety, though, stress-free dental care may seem impossible. Fortunately, we proudly offer IV sedation at our Troy, MI practice. Released directly into your blood stream, anti-anxiety medications will produce a “twilight sleep.” During your procedure, you will be completely relaxed and unaware of what is taking place. Dr. Craig Goldin is certified in IV sedation, and he can adjust the medications as needed. Therefore, you will be both safe and comfortable during your entire procedure.

Would You Benefit from IV Sedation?

If you are uncomfortable going to the dental office for any reason, you are likely a candidate for intravenous (IV) sedation. Dental phobia can arise from many different causes. You may have had an unpleasant experience at another practice, or you may have heard frightening stories from someone else. Like some patients, you may be claustrophobic, have a strong gag reflex, or suffer from extreme dental sensitivity. Just as there are different causes for dental phobia, this strong anxiety can also manifest differently for each patient. Common consequences of dental anxiety include:

  • Insomnia the night before a dental visit
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Racing heartbeat or heart palpitations
  • Reluctance or refusal to schedule needed dental treatment

You may also benefit from dental sedation if you are going to undergo a lengthier treatment. For example, we often provide IV sedation prior to dental implant surgery and full mouth rehabilitation procedures.

Dr. Goldin will carefully monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, and other vital signs with sophisticated equipment.

Sedation Dentistry – Troy and Detroit

At our Troy dental practice, we offer sedation dentistry to patients who have fear or anxiety about dental treatments.  Sedation dentistry helps put our patients at ease and allows our dentists to complete complex treatments in a shorter amount of time.

How IV Sedation Works

If you choose sedation, Dr. Goldin will administer anesthesia through an IV line in your hand or the inside of your elbow. The medication will take effect quickly, causing you to become drowsy and then fall into a twilight sleep. You will not technically be asleep in this state, but you will be unaware of what is going on around you. Dr. Goldin will carefully monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, and other vital signs with sophisticated equipment. He can then reduce the levels of medication, as needed. In other cases, he can increase the dose of anesthesia to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout your procedure.

As the medication leaves your system, you will have little to no memory of your procedure. Note that it will take some time for all of the anesthesia to wear off. Therefore, you will need to have someone drive you home from your appointment.

Advantages of IV Sedation

Because of Dr. Goldin’s experience and training, IV sedation is very safe. With these medications, you can comfortably undergo the treatment you need. If you suffer from dental phobia, this may well be the easiest and most pleasant dental care you have ever experienced. In turn, reduced anxiety will make it easier to schedule routine appointments. As a result, you will have a reduced risk for cavities, gum disease, and related problems.
