Gum Treatment

At the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute in Oakland County, we provide treatments for patients who have periodontal (gum) disease. It is best to treat gum disease at an early stage. It has the best chance of healing and not progressing if we treat it early.

DR. CRAIG GOLDIN: Patients who have periodontal problems are seen by our really highly skilled hygienist, and they may receive non-surgical gum treatment. It's called scaling and root planing. It's not a difficult procedure, but it is very important that it be done properly, and it's very meticulously done by our dental hygienist, very often with local anesthesia, sometimes with nitrous oxide or IV sedation if the patient is interested in that. In some instances, the patient receives medicine that is placed below the gum line to kill the bacteria that is causing the gum disease. Gum disease, as you know, is probably the number one most common disease known to man, and it's been linked to several other disease throughout the body. We really want to eliminate gum disease. If necessary, patients can receive additional periodontal care or periodontal surgery in our office as well. Periodontal disease is best treated at its earliest stage. It has the best chance of healing and not progressing if we treat it early, and it's really important for a patient who has periodontal disease to be seen regularly by the dentist so that we can make sure that the periodontal disease is arrested and that it's not getting worse.
